Enter your current age, annual income, annual expenses, current savings, and expected investment return rate. The calculator determines your FIRE Number (the portfolio size that can sustain your expenses indefinitely), your Coast FIRE milestone, and the number of years until you reach financial independence.
The projection chart shows your wealth trajectory and marks the exact year you can stop working. Adjust your savings rate or expenses to see how they impact your FIRE date.
FIRE — Financial Independence, Retire Early — is a movement focused on aggressive saving and investing to reach a point where investment income covers all living expenses, making traditional employment optional.
The FIRE number is based on the 4% Rule (also called the Trinity Study safe withdrawal rate): your FIRE number equals your annual expenses × 25. If you spend $50,000/year, you need $1,250,000 invested. The 4% rule suggests that withdrawing 4% of your portfolio annually, adjusted for inflation, has historically sustained a portfolio for 30+ years with a 95%+ success rate.
Lean FIRE: Achieving FI on a minimal budget ($25,000-$40,000/year). Requires the smallest portfolio but demands significant lifestyle constraints. Regular FIRE: Maintaining a moderate lifestyle in retirement. Fat FIRE: Retiring with a portfolio that supports a comfortable or affluent lifestyle ($100,000+/year). Coast FIRE: Saving enough early that compound growth alone will reach your FIRE number by traditional retirement age — allowing you to stop saving and only earn enough to cover current expenses.
Your savings rate — the percentage of take-home pay you invest — is the single biggest lever. At a 10% savings rate, retirement takes about 51 years. At 25%, it's 32 years. At 50%, it's 17 years. At 70%, just 8.5 years. Cutting expenses has a double benefit: it reduces your FIRE number AND increases your savings rate.
