Enter your monthly essential expenses (rent, utilities, food, insurance, minimum debt payments). The calculator shows how much you need for a 3-month, 6-month, and 9-month emergency fund, and tells you how long it will take to build each at your chosen monthly savings rate.
The right emergency fund size depends on your job stability, income sources, and risk tolerance. Most financial advisors recommend 3-6 months of essential expenses.
An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected expenses or income disruption — job loss, medical bills, major car or home repairs, or other unplanned events. It's the foundation of financial security and should be established before pursuing other financial goals.
3 months: Appropriate if you have a stable job, dual-income household, good health insurance, and no dependents. 6 months: Recommended for most people — covers a typical job search period and provides a comfortable buffer. 9-12 months: Advisable for self-employed individuals, single-income households, people in volatile industries, or those with dependents.
Your emergency fund should be liquid (accessible within 1-2 business days) and low-risk (not subject to market fluctuations). High-yield savings accounts (currently earning 4-5% APY) or money market accounts are ideal. Do not invest emergency funds in stocks, bonds, or other volatile assets — the money needs to be there when you need it, regardless of market conditions.
If saving 6 months of expenses feels overwhelming, start with a "starter" emergency fund of $1,000-$2,000. This covers minor emergencies (car repair, medical copay) while you work on paying off high-interest debt. Once high-rate debt is eliminated, redirect those payments to build the full fund.
